Hardcover with full leather boards with gilt border, and raised bands and gilt to spine. Marbled endpapers and text block. 1226 pages with Index. Illustrated with frontis portrait of the author. Edward Gibbon's well known history of "The Fall of the Roman Empire" was originally written in 1789. The work is considered one of the foremost histories of the Roman empire, which spanned thirteen centuries from the height of Rome to the fall of Byzantium. Firm binding; rubbed corners and edges; normal wear and rubbing to full leather boards; inked name and name stamp to ffep; old water stains to frontis and front endpapers; foxing to first and last few pages; interior is clean and free of markings.
