"The book is a collection of stories and sketches detailing Pinkerton's experiences as a detective, as well as those of other detectives who worked for his agency. The stories cover a range of topics, including bank robberies, train robberies, and other crimes committed by professional thieves. The book provides insight into the methods and techniques used by detectives in the late 19th century, as well as the criminal underworld of the time." [Online review] Robert Pinkerton (1848-1907) was the Co-Director of the famed American private security firm, the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, which was a precursor of the Federal Bureau of Investigation established in 1850 by Robert’s father, Allan Pinkerton. Allan Pinkerton was born in Glasgow and emigrated to Chicago, where he established the largest private law enforcement organization in the world. Pinkerton’s made its name apprehending a series of high profile train robbers in the 1850s and foiling an assassination attempt on the life of President elect Abraham Lincoln, for which Allan Pinkerton was appointed the President’s personal security guard during the American Civil War." Includes embossed stamp to title page of Joseph A. Sadony, the noted "philosopher-scientist" and author.
